What is self storage and how does it work?

Self storage is a service offering flexible, do-it-yourself storage for domestic and business customers. We provide clean, dry, individually alarmed storage rooms, access to which is available free of charge seven days a week*. Your storage room is locked with your own padlock (a full range is sold in our stores), ensuring that only you have access to your goods.

*Access is free and unlimited during our long opening hours, 7 days a week. However, if this is not convenient, we also offer Extended Access (5am - 11pm), additional charges apply. Please call for further details and availability

Why do I need my own padlock?

You need your own padlock (A full range is sold in our stores), to ensure that you are the sole key holder for your room and to ensure that your room is securely locked at all times.

How much does it cost to store my things with you?

The cost of a storage room depends upon the size of room that you require. We suggest that you consult our on line size estimator, or speak to a member of our staff, to determine the optimum storage for your requirements. A price can then be quoted on the correct size room. At Big Yellow we have rooms ranging from a 10 sq. ft. space to 500 sq. ft. or more and prices start from as little as £10 a week. We do NOT charge VAT on storage rooms

What is included in the price - are there any hidden extras?

The price you are quoted by our staff includes your storage charge, rates, service charges, utility bills and maintenance costs and we do NOT charge VAT on storage rooms. You will need a padlock to secure your room and your goods will need to be insured whilst they are in storage. A refundable security deposit equal to one weeks storage charge (four weeks if you do not sign a direct debit) is payable at the commencement of storage and is refunded when you vacate your storage room.

Do I pay weekly or monthly?

We invoice customers on a four weekly (twenty eight day) basis, payable in advance. However, we only ask for seven days notice when you vacate your room and we refund to you any unused storage and insurance charge.

Do you offer any discounts?

Yes we offer a range of discounts including:

An introductory offer of up to 50% off your first four weeks storage charge available at a number of our stores. This discount provides great value for short term storers, such as home movers.

For longer term storers we also offer the following pre-payment discounts:

5% off storage charge for 24 weeks pre payment.
10% off storage charge for 52 weeks pre payment.

We also offer a 10% discount to students upon production of a valid Student Union Card and prepayment of 16 weeks of storage. And a 10% discount to members of the Military on production of a valid Military ID.

... and remember unlike many of our competitors we do NOT charge VAT on storage rooms.

How can I pay for my storage?

We offer a number of payment options including credit card, debit card, cheque and direct debit. Cash will only be accepted for payments after your initial payment at move-in.

How often can I have access to my goods and how much does it cost for access?

We offer unlimited access to your goods 7 days a week 365 days a year, so you can add or remove items from your storage room whenever you require. Access is FREE at Big Yellow during our long opening hours. However if this is not convenient we also offer Extended Access hours (5am to 11pm) and this is available upon payment of a small additional administration charge.

Do I have to book a room?

No, you can fill in your storage licence today and move in immediately. However to be guaranteed a room of a specific size on arrival, it is advisable to book your room in advance. The reservation deposit is £25 and holds your room for upto 4 weeks.

Can I move in today?

Yes, a member of our staff will fill in our simple storage licence with you, and then you can move your goods in straight away. You will need to bring with you a suitable proof of identity (a passport); proof of address (a utility bill); and a means of payment that is not cash.

What are your opening hours?

Our reception opening hours are:

Monday - Friday 8am - 6pm
Saturday 9am - 6pm
Sunday 10am - 2pm

However, once you become a Big Yellow customer you can arrange to have Extended Access (5am - 11pm) subject to the payment of a small additional charge.

Are there any limitations on access?

No, once you become a Big Yellow customer you will be offered access seven days a week during our long opening hours.

Do I have to sign a lease?

No you don't. You sign a straightforward Storage Licence prior to moving into your room. The agreement comprises a simple "no fuss" contract. Our staff will talk you through the contents of the agreement and the key terms you are committing too.

How do I get my goods to you?

You can bring your goods in your own vehicle, if you have enough space. We have ample car parking and large loading/unloading areas at all of our stores. Alternatively, we can recommend local van hire/removal companies to help with your transportation.

Do you do removals/van hire?

No, we are purely a self storage facility. However we will be happy to recommend local removal/van hire companies, many of which offer discounted rates to Big Yellow customers. The companies we recommend are our trusted partners and have worked with us over many years.

What is the smallest room you have available?

Our smallest rooms are one metre cubed lockers (3ftx3ftx3ft). Our walk-in storage rooms are seven to nine feet high and start from 15 sq. ft. In some stores we do have a limited number of 10 sq. ft. rooms available.

Can I transfer to another room if I find I have too much or too little space?

You are welcome to move to another size room at any time, depending on your storage requirements and the availability of other room sizes in your store.

How high are your storage rooms?

Depending upon the Big Yellow store you choose, our rooms range from seven feet to nine feet and above in height.

Are the storage rooms heated?

Our rooms are not heated. However, the temperature within our stores remains fairly constant, notwithstanding the season. Our modern buildings are very well insulated so that our stores are never too hot or unduly cold.

We have temperature controlled areas in some of our stores which are ideal for the storage of sensitive items. Please contact us for further details.

What sort of security do you have?

All Big Yellow stores incorporate extensive security features, including:
  • 24 hour Digital CCTV located both inside and outside the main building, monitoring all entrances & exits
  • A sophisticated twin alarm system; one for the building and one for each individual storage room
  • Coded electronic gate access to the building allowing access only with your own personal PIN Number
  • A fire and smoke detection system
  • Mobile security patrols able to react to any alarm activations

What is the minimum time I can store with you?

Once I have a room how long can I stay?

You are welcome to stay for a week, month, year - or for as long as you require.

Do I have to give you notice to leave?

We only require seven days notice of your intention to vacate your room. At this time a refund will be processed for the initial security deposit and any unused monies that you have paid. Notice must be given in writing, by either fax, post or e-mail.

What can I store?

You can store almost anything in our rooms. The only exceptions are;

  • Living items - such as animals & plants
  • Hazardous materials - such as flammable liquids and explosives
  • Items that could decompose - such as exposed foodstuffs
  • Unauthorised or illegal goods - such as firearms etc.
Beware
Customs and Police have statutory powers allowing them to gain access to your room should they serve the appropriate notice on Big Yellow. We also conduct random sniffer-dog patrols at our stores for the protection of all our customers.

Do you sell boxes and packing materials, and will you deliver them to me?

Yes, we sell an extensive range of packing materials from boxes to bubble wrap. Packing materials can be purchased in person from our stores or you can purchase storage packs on-line from www.bigyellow.co.uk and have them delivered to your door.

Do you have trolleys available?

There are a number of different size trolleys and pallet trucks available free of charge for customers use. We also have a forklift truck available for any heavier goods, which can be operated on your behalf by one of our trained staff.

Is there someone at the store I can talk to should I have a problem?

There will always be a trained member of staff available seven days a week during reception opening times. Outside of office hours there are telephones located in our loading bays and lift lobbies, that will connect you with our security company should you require their assistance.
