Glass & Co UK
For someone previously tasked with delighting diners, Dani Juliá has a refined palate when it comes to critiquing a company’s standard of service.
It is a ‘take away’ that has been a key ingredient in the growth of his own businesses, Glass & Co UK and KBRH Catering Equipment, and the principal reason he continues to take a sizeable table at one of Big Yellows West London locations.
The service-savvy Spaniard first took space in the West London store in 2015 on a temporary basis while he sought a suitable warehouse property to purchase but, having had his exacting standards satisfied, has been dissuaded from departing.
“Since being at Big Yellow the service has been so good – you can upsize and downsize as necessary and the staff are excellent – so we have decided to stay,” said the hospitality entrepreneur, whose 12-strong staff currently occupy 3,300 sq ft of storage, showroom and office space and supply glass- and tableware to catering providers across the UK.
While Dani was also quick to cite the peace of mind afforded by store's security systems and its convenient location for accessing customers in the capital as further positives, it is Big Yellow’s polished presentation that provides the proverbial icing on the cake for a man accustomed to working with some of London’s lavish hotels and exceptional eateries.
“Many of our customers visit our showroom and find that they can easily park, the building is clean and that the Big Yellow team are always very polite and helpful,” he added. “People come here and have a very good first impression.”
“I would recommend Big Yellow to everyone. Whether you are a start-up or an established company like we are, it gives you the flexibility you need in business.”
Providing proprietors of bars, restaurants, hotels and clubs with a similarly positive experience has proved pivotal to the popularity of Glass & Co UK and KBRH Catering Equipment.
“When you’ve worked in the hospitality industry before, you have a good feel for what people are looking for,” explained the 50-year-old. “What we understood pretty quickly is that people want a good standard of service.
“Service is key for all businesses but particularly when you are working with the restaurant and hospitality industry. You need to have a good supply of quality stock and be able to respond pretty quickly.
“Everyone in the catering industry is really organised until they need something so if they have a big party book or sudden spike in sales, they need a supplier they can call on at short notice and have confidence in their ability to respond.
While bringing calm to the behind-the-scenes hustle and bustle of hospitality through a reliable service is at the spearhead of Dani’s success, his eye for quality and design has also been critical. A first-hand knowledge of the look and feel of products befitting Michelin-starred settings ensures the ranges offered by Glass & Co UK and KBRH Catering Equipment remain in demand.
“You need to be able to see the trends,” Dani concluded. “However, I have been caught by surprise on occasions. When we first set-up and I was choosing glassware to import from Austria there was a wine glass that I just wasn’t sure about and it went on to sell more than any other item.
“You have to follow your instinct and sometimes you are right but you have to remember you might also be wrong. You need to have an eye for these things and you need to get it right more than you get it wrong, but in business it is good to be critical of your own tastes sometimes.
“Our success is down to a combination of good quality, good price and good service.”
Staying true to this formula and acknowledging the old adage ‘the customer is always right’ has certainly stood Dani in good stead since his days working in the restaurant industry and – as demonstrated by Glass & Co UK, KBRH Catering Equipment and Big Yellow – is a recipe for rave reviews.
