Love For Local
Love For Local was launched in 2009 by Toby Drought, selling and distributing food and drink from hand-picked producers to independent retailers and eateries, such as farm shops and delis. Toby set up Love For Local with the aim of improving the accessibility of local British produce. Therefore, all goods are made in the South East of England with locally-sourced ingredients where possible.
For the first two years, Toby used his home to store produce between collection from suppliers and delivery to his customers. As trade picked up, his home became overrun with stock and Toby realised he needed a space that was fit for purpose. It also needed to be clean so he could store produce hygienically.
Toby contacted Big Yellow Self Storage to find out how they could help. He was immediately attracted to the scalability of the units available for rent, explaining: "We were outgrowing the home, but it was too early to consider renting a whole premises."
The spaces were also secure and clean, ticking all of Toby's criteria, so in the summer of 2011, Love For Local moved into a 30 square foot space at the New Malden store.
In the past two years, the business has grown steadily and now occupies a 150 square foot unit. Toby has used the extra unit space to accommodate the growing produce he needs to fulfil customer orders.
Toby credits the little things for helping make a big difference. Free access to trolleys and pump trucks at Big Yellow Self Storage make ferrying stock from his van to his unit, hassle-free. There are also boxes and packing tape on hand to buy, should he need them.
Out-of-hours access has also been invaluable in Love For Local's success, says Toby. "The nature of my business means I need to be out on the road during office hours supplying customers. Being able to access my stock at 6am enables me to load up and get started bright and early."
In fact, Love For Local has grown so much that Toby now requires a dedicated office space and has selected a Flexi-Office at the New Malden store, which he'll move into later this year. "It offers me flexibility as I won't be tied into a long-term lease," he says. "Plus, I'll be within close proximity of all of my stock. It's an all-round perfect solution for a small, but expanding, business."
