Did You Know: Underground Storage

… that precious items and documents are often buried underground for safekeeping? Thousands of artefacts were shielded from Luftwaffe bombs in England’s underground caves during World War 2 and stolen treasures from all over war-torn Europe were liberated from Hitler’s salt mines in pristine condition. Chruchill also relied on underground storage to protect the artwork of the National Portrait Gallery back in 1939, as possibility that London might suffer saturation bombing meant that a new, safer home was needed. Quarries were blasted, roads were rebuilt and secret convoys of vans set off for Britain’s most remote and secure outposts. There’s no need to take quite such drastic actions today, as our temperature controlled self-storage units are perfectly designed to store accommodate your artwork, valuable prints or paintings.

Tips and Tricks: Insurance

Be aware of your surroundings when you are in your unit, if you see a potential problem or anything suspicious, alert the manager. Do not give out your password, gate code or any information on your self storage solution to anyone that is not listed as having ‘access’.

Tips and Tricks: Write on all Sides

… of each storage item (whether it’s a box, cabinet or file), write down what it contains and to what kind of room it belongs. Don’t just write it on one side, as sometimes it may be stacked in such a way that your label will be hidden from view. This saves time when trying to remove one item from your unit. If you don’t want to write directly onto something, buy some masking tape and a marker pen. The tape won’t leave any residue or damage the item you need to label for effective self storage.

EduSport Inspires Us!

EduSport Inspires Us!

Big Yellow Self Storage’s Swindon store has provided free storage to EduSport – the charity that sponsors talented but poor, handicapped or orphaned African children. It has been campaigning to collect hundreds of books so they can build libraries in Zambia. The charity was established in 1999 and uses sport, recreation and other forms of physical activities as a means to achieve empowerment, education and health in poor communities in Zambia. Programs are currently being implemented in 6 of 9 provinces of Zambia and it is easily the largest Sport NGO / charity in Zambia. With so many books to send over, the charity needed somewhere safe to keep the fruits of all their hard work. We felt that all their efforts and determination to succeed should not go unnoticed. We decided to help out EduSport with their storage requirements […]

Did You Know: Carbon Footprint

…that one of the methods being used to try and make coal-powered fuel a ‘cleaner’ option is carbon capture and storage? This involves capturing the CO2 from coal-fired power plants, compressing it into a liquid and injecting it deep beneath the earth. There the CO2 is sealed in to prevent it from seeping back to the surface and into the air. Though this is relatively inexpensive to carry out, the difficulty is capturing it at the power plant without sapping too much energy or pushing electric costs up too high. For example, one 500-megawatt coal-fired power plant produces three million tons of CO2 annually. Adding carbon capture technology to that plant sucks up 40 percent of the power it can produce and adds an additional cost onto the retail price of that electricity. Balancing environmental and commercial objectives is also […]

Tips and Tricks: Collectables

…When wrapping collectables or anything breakable for self storage, tape the package afterwards. This should avoid mistaking them for excess paper to fill the box. Use bubble wrap or unprinted paper to wrap breakables. Group similar items together and mark the boxes accordingly.

The 2009 London Wine Show Unleashed

This month sees the return of The Wine Show, held at The Business Design Centre in Islington from Thursday 22nd – Sunday 25th October. It’s the country’s biggest consumer wine show and well worth a visit if you have even a slight interest in wine! A great chance to taste a large number of wines from all over the world and meet world famous wine critics such as Oz Clarke and Tim Atkin MW. With the option to buy wine at the event it’s a great chance to get your cellar topped up and discover new and interesting wines. Having thoroughly enjoyed last year’s event, I would highly recommend heading down, although Friday and Saturday evenings are not for the faint hearted! Tickets range from £12.50 – £55.00 depending on which level of tantalisation your palate desires. Visit wineshow.co.uk for […]

Did You Know: Big Yellow is Green

…that Big Yellow has reduced its electricity consumption by over 1 million kWh and its carbon dioxide emissions by 7.4% this year? Big Yellow stores have two types of carbon emission; first, the electricity used for lighting, lifts, heating, cooling and ventilation, which causes ‘indirect’ emissions and second, stores with flexi-offices have additional gas heated areas which cause ‘direct’ emissions. The total store electricity consumption and carbon dioxide emissions per square metre of occupied storage space has decreased by approximately 3.5% for the year ending March 2009. This reduction was due to the company’s new store development program of higher standards of insulation, air tightness, energy efficiency and renewable energy generation as well, as the installation of motion sensor lighting and other energy efficiency lighting.
