Big Yellow Bramall Lane win a Sheffield Telegraph Environment Award

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Big Yellow picked up the Business award for outstanding environmental and sustainable innovations and improvements at this year’s Sheffield Telegraph Environment Awards last night.

In its fifth year, the event was truly inspiring with guest speakers including Paul Hudson, the BBC Look North weather reporter, discussing issues relating to climate change and changing the public’s opinion.

Big Yellow was up against some tough competition including Meadow Hall Shopping centre for their outstanding recycling system.

Hannah Jones, Big Yellow employee said “The judges were really impressed with Big Yellow’s commitment to the environment and the fact that we have a green feature in a large number of our stores. They also commented on how passionate the staff were about the company’s corporate social responsibility and in particular Bramall Lane store which has encouraged local wildlife, flora and fauna by planting hundreds of trees at the rear of the building.”

The award is now proudly on display in the reception of Bramall Lane.

Big Yellow Fellows get their legs waxed for charity!

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Having cycled more than 191 miles around London over two days to raise money for charity, the four man team made up of Big Yellow staff, decided to get their legs waxed one by one in celebration at raising so much money for the Get Kids Going! charity.

The team, made up of leader, Mike FitzGerald, store manager at Big Yellow Romford, Luke McLaughlin from Birmingham Big Yellow, Richard Shubrook and Paul Holmes from Big Yellow Head office, decided that if the team raised over £1,500 Luke and Mike would get their legs waxed, at £2,000 Richard is up with Paul following behind at £3,000.

Team leader Mike told us “We were so amazed at how much everyone got behind us and supported the challenge. As the money grew higher and higher, we started talking about what else we could do to raise more. After one too many drinks, we decided that getting our legs waxed was a good idea if we reached £1,500. Within two weeks of the cycle, we surpassed it which was great…although nerve racking at the same time.”

The money raised will provide much needed funding for national charity, Get Kids Going! which helps buy disabled children and young people specially built sporting equipment so they can take part in next year’s Paralympics’.

The money raised so far will go towards buying much needed equipment and sports grants that will, hopefully, secure GB some medals at the 2012 Paralympics.

On having his legs waxed Mike said “It’s one of the most painful things I have ever had done. I was first up thankfully, as I am not sure I would have gone through with it having watched someone else go through the agony. If it was a choice between cycling 200 miles or having my legs waxed again, cycling wins every time!”

Yellow Fellows we salute you!

Big Yellow Self Storage staff visit English Institute of Sport, Sheffield

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Kirsty from Big Yellow Self Storage together with Trina and Kirstie from our Armadillo Stores watched UK medal hopefuls in action during a tour of the English Institute of Sport (EIS) in Sheffield.

The impressive lottery funded facility is big enough to cater for a wide variety of sports and features state of the art equipment. As well as being a tremendous asset for elite athletes, the Institute works on projects to bring sport into the community.

There were several presentations from the organizers of Team 2012, which gave an insight into the funding operation. The goal is to raise £25 million and £14 million has already been raised. The money raised will help fund equipment for over 1200 athletes across 47 sports.

Our Big Yellow and Armadillo staff were told about two key projects the Institute is promoting: table tennis and boxing. The Institute is funding a table tennis coach from world leaders China. Kirsty from Big Yellow got to see the coach in action and even play a game against medal hopeful Kelly Sibley.

Inside the boxing halls, they saw Natasha Jonas, reigning European champion, together with Luke Campbell and Anthony Ogogo practicing their style and technique. Boxing is a very well funded and popular sport. As part of the outreach project, mobile boxing rings are being used in communities with impressive results.

The day was a fantastic insight into the development of English sporting talent and a great way of seeing the Big Yellow sponsorship of Team 2012 in action. To find out more about our medal hopefuls and work at the Institute please visit their website.

Big Yellow Supports Mayors Toy Appeal

Friday, December 17th, 2010

For the 3rd year running, Big Yellow Tunbridge Wells is supporting The Mayors Toy appeal in the area. We are acting as a donation station for toys and offering free storage to the appeal in the run up to Christmas.

The Toy Appeal is celebrating its 21st anniversary and each year they have been helping children from disadvantaged families celebrate Christmas. The local community can donate gifts, which will then be wrapped in our store and given to children as presents.

Last year the Toy Appeal successfully gave Christmas gifts to 279 children living in the area of Tunbridge Wells, with many of the presents donated by local residents, shops and stores, as well as local churches, schools and other organisations.

Sponsored Walk For Cash For Kids

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Staff members from Big Yellow Bramall Lane, Armadillo West Bar and Parkway have all taken part in a sponsored walk to raise money for Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids appeal. The aim of the Cash for Kids appeal is to ensure that every child in South Yorkshire and North Midlands wakes up to a gift on Christmas morning.

The team has walked ‘miles for smiles’ and managed to raise £325 for the cause. Another way for people to get involved is to buy new and unwrapped gifts and donate them at selected stores in the area.

Every year there are thousands of children across the region that wake up on Christmas morning with no presents to open. To find out how you can help the cause visit Hallam FM’s Cash For Kids website here.

READ International Uganda Update (Part 2)

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Throughout the six weeks in Uganda the student volunteers from the University of Edinburgh were faced with many challenges in the library and by the end they had managed to create a fantastic space. The opening ceremony of the library really brought it home to the volunteers what they had achieved. Children had the opportunity to explore the new books that had been donated to READ and kept secure in Big Yellow Self Storage’s rooms across the UK.

The day was full of special moments as children of all ages surrounded the team throughout eager to be read to. Children from local primary schools performed during the event standing up reading in front of the others showing their delight at the new facilities.

Members of the town council and representatives from the National Library of Uganda set out their ambitions for the future of the library and filled READ and the team with hope. The renovation wasn’t the end but a beginning where members of the local community could meet, study and read for pleasure.

READ International Uganda Update (Part 1)

Monday, September 6th, 2010

On the 22nd August READ International completed its latest mission in Uganda with the help of student volunteers from the University of Edinburgh. They were able to successfully distribute over 29,000 textbooks to primary and secondary schools in the Mubende and Masaka districts. At the same time they were also able to aid in the renovation of the Mubende Community Library.

When the team from Edinburgh arrived at the library it was a dark and gloomy building with a small number of books gathering dust in a storage cupboard. It was a large space so the team had to really get stuck in if they were to make a difference. The team showed the same enthusiasm that they demonstrated throughout the previous year when the team were collecting textbooks and raising money.

For the first time the town had a library that everyone could use which created a real buzz in the area. Youth engagement is a really important part of READ’s work so it was great for them to see groups of students from nearby secondary schools leading a hand helping the team and making the project a lot easier and more fun!

Stay tuned for news from the Mubende Community Library opening ceremony in part 2…

Armadillo Self Storage Finds The Perfect Storage Solution For RSPCA Peterborough

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Our Armadillo store in Peterborough has come to the rescue of a very deserving local RSPCA charity shop as it closes its doors for the last time. There is a new shop opening in the near future, but until then staff need to store their stock. In anticipation of the new shop opening, Armadillo Self Storage has donated free storage space for three months to help out.

As a result, the RSCPA shop doesn’t have to spend money on storage and can instead channel those funds straight back into helping animals in the Greater Peterborough area that have sadly been abandoned or neglected.

Visit RSPCA Peterborough for further information on volunteering and fundraising opportunities.

Armadillo Self Storage Sheffield Supports Rotherham Hospice

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Armadillo Self Storage Sheffield Parkway was delighted to aid Rotherham Hospice with their recent storage needs. They are gearing up to open a new shop in the area which will become the fifth store for the charity. It’s scheduled to open early this month and will sell a range of bargain items including clothes, cards, DVDs, toys and household goods.

As the Rotherham Hospice team prepares for the grand opening, Armadillo Self Storage has been able to donate free storage space to enable them to store donations safely and securely until the new store is ready to open. The stores are a very important source of income for the hospice as the contributions allow people to turn donated goods back into cash for the charity which supports people with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

The hospice is currently recruiting up to 20 volunteers to help run the new shop with some of the tasks being serving customers, sorting stock and maintaining the displays.

Visit Rotherham Hospice for further information on volunteering, fundraising or making a donation to this amazing charity!

Exciting News From READ International

Friday, August 13th, 2010

It’s a very exciting time for READ International as donations have arrived safely in East Africa! Their summer team has recently received 280,000 books that are destined for Tanzanian schools and that will be transported across 14 regions of Tanzania this month. These are much needed donations that give kids the opportunity to learn from books that their schools could never usually afford.

We’re also very happy to hear that READ International are receiving hundreds of queries a week from people who wish to donate books to schools in East Africa. Big Yellow is delighted to be able to donate space across the country where READ International can store books before they are ready for shipping. The new donations will remain in the UK until their new teams of eager volunteers start university in September.

In the coming weeks ahead they will be distributing books to Tanzanian and Ugandan teachers and students. We’ll be looking forward to hearing even more great achievements!
