Spring cleaning: Not Just A Makeover For Your House

Spring cleaning: Not Just A Makeover For Your House

The annual spring cleaning ritual is a great way to kick-start your health in many ways. From a health perspective, a deep spring clean is the chance to get mold, dust and other harmful irritants out of your house. A great resource is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site for Healthy Homes. Though it might sound crazy, cleaning can also be a great workout. Take the time to go through every room and tackle every mess. Lifting boxes, vacuuming, scrubbing the bathroom, it’s all calories burned and strength earned. Financially, don’t forget that loose change! It’s money you can add to your savings, put toward paying off debt or use for immediate purchases. And while you’re at it, turn clutter into cash by holding a garage sale to empty the items from your ‘sell’ pile – or […]

Learn From The Best Countries For Self Storage Solutions

Learn From The Best Countries For Self Storage Solutions

In one of the most crowded countries in the world, space is a big issue. To put this into context, Japan is roughly the size of California, slightly larger than Great Britain, and only a little smaller than France. However, it has over double the population of the UK. As such, innovation in storing everything from clothes to food is standard. Storage lockers are placed around the city, as are bike racks – and data storage is a large part of the country’s economy. What can we learn from this though? Building small can be a sign of higher ambitions, and creating a small home can be an amazingly positive and creative act, one which can enhance life in surprising ways. ‘The Very Small Home’ by Azby Brown presents stunning design advances in Japan. Particular emphasis is given to what […]

Self Storage Rooms As An Office

Self Storage Rooms As An Office

The one thing you’ll inevitably need if you’re planning to set up your own business from home is a lot of space. With the help of commercial self storage, you can make this process a lot easier by storing papers and documents securely offsite. It’s a great way to store documents safely, and also provides the opportunity to many to not only change the way they work – but also expand their businesses. Seek, And You Shall Find

Seek, And You Shall Find

At this time of year, we’re all busy sorting through boxes of clothes and books, papers and knick-knacks, trying to work out where on earth they came from. Though much of it ends up at the charity shop or in the paper shredder, you’ll sometimes find a few gems among the mess. In a way, it’s the same for the world wide web – there’s a lot of rubbish, but a lot of fun too. It’s precisely this sentiment that’s inspired the launch of the blogs below, all of which celebrate that one man’s garbage is another man’s gold! FFFFOUND is a web service that not only allows the users to post and share their favorite images found on the web, but also dynamically recommends each user’s tastes and interests for an inspirational image-based bookmarking experience. Win an Eco HD TV!

Win an Eco HD TV!

We cherish the three Rs here at Big Yellow Self Storage. Yes, that’s Reduce, Reuse & Recycle! We’ve built this ethos into the way we operate our facilities. In fact, we’re investing over £1 million in renewable energy technologies at Barking, Balham, Fulham and Kennington, as well as working with a full time environmental manager to increase the pace of change within the company. This investment forms a key part of a detailed study into the actual buildings themselves, to quantify the energy, waste usage and benefits of these new technologies. We’re also looking at which improvements can be introduced to existing and new stores alike. One of the most innovative steps we’ve taken is to use products that are more sustainable. As well as selecting materials responsibly with low embodied energy, easy reuse and from sustainable sources. We’re trying […]

Travelling to work with Big Yellow

Travelling to work with Big Yellow

As part of Big Yellow Self Storage’s ongoing CSR efforts, we’ve been working with the HR and Operations team to raise awareness of the social and environmental impacts of our business. After our company policy was distributed to all stores in 2008 and presented during the annual 2009 Spring Conference, all employee inductions now include an introduction to our CSR objectives. One of the interactive aspects of this policy is the recent Employee Work Travel project, which took the shape of an Intranet-based survey in Autumn 2008. It covered a variety of questions to help build a profile of the distance people travelled to and from work, how much business travel was carried out during working hours and the different modes of transport use. Employee response came back at a very impressive 85%, indicating that prior education had been successful, […]
