Make Some Space, Make Some Money

Make Some Space, Make Some Money

You don’t have to be David Dickenson to spot a valuable item in your home. Having a good search around your home may uncover some precious heirlooms you’ve previously overlooked. Most garages, lofts and sheds are crammed full of belongings, clearing out these spaces could have you laughing all the way to the bank. There are countless success stories of people finding antique items in their homes worth hundreds or even thousands of pounds. Ian and Lynda Spires from Milton Keynes uncovered some old railway signs in their loft, worth an amazing £20,000. The signs were being used as make shift flooring. Did You Know England Invented The Concept Of Self Storage?

Did You Know England Invented The Concept Of Self Storage?

Did you know the British banking industry came up with the idea of self storage? In the 1800’s business men about to go on long journeys asked bankers to protect their valuables for them until they returned. The bankers stored their clients possessions inside the vault, but this space quickly ran out resulting in the bankers finding an alternative storage solution, renting loft space from moving companies instead. However it wasn’t until the mid 1960’s in Texas that self storage facilities as we know them today were born. The concept was instantly successful and was quickly replicated across the rest of America and Canada. England was slow to react and didn’t adopt self storage for the general public until the late 1980’s. There were many risks involved for early entrepreneurs who developed the self storage industry in the UK. Land […]

Organise Your Wine Cellar On Your iPhone

Organise Your Wine Cellar On Your iPhone

Forgetting what you have in your wine cellar could be a thing of the past thanks to the Cellar and Open Cellar applications available for your iPod and the Open Cellar software for your home computer. Cellar is an iPhone, iPod or iPad application, which is designed to help you organise your wine collection wherever and whenever you like. The application acts as a swipeable showcase of your wine rack. You can categorise your wine bottles, edit what is in your cellar and browse through your collection. Any bottles you have removed to drink or sell can be discarded to the ‘Garage’. This feature recognises that the particular bottles are no longer a part of your collection, but saves them in the Garage for future reference. Don’t have an iPhone? Not a problem! Open Cellar is an equally useful programme, […]

Did You Know The Most Money Made In A UK Auction Is £153 Million?

Did you know that in June this year an impressionist’s art sale fetched £152.6 million, beating the record for the most money ever made in a UK auction? The highlight of the sale at the London auction house, Christies was a 1903 painting by Pablo Picasso. The piece, named ‘Portrait of Angel Fernandez De Soto’, (also known as ‘The Absinthe Drinker’), sold for £34.7 million. Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Art Foundation, a charity set up by the British composer to promote art, culture and heritage in Britain, bought the artwork for £19 million in 1995.
