Tips and Tricks: Photographs

… To store photographs properly, make sure you use the right type of albums. Do not place old photographs (or any photographs for that matter) in albums which are magnetic or of the ‘stick and peel’ variety in self storage. Over time, the plastic, cardboard, paper and glue found in such albums will only damage your photos. Instead, invest in albums which are guaranteed and labeled as free of acids. Use a permanent black marker on the back of the photographs to identify the time, occasion and the people or subjects in the photo. Make sure to write with a soft grip, so as to not leave any marks or indentations on the pictures. If you don’t want to put your photographs in albums or frames, then you can use plastic sleeves or bags which are PVC-free. Another option in […]

Did You Know: Recycled Packing Materials

…that for over a year, Big Yellow has sourced information on the environmental credentials of packing materials for our customers? This includes the distances travelled from source, right through to the make up of the cardboard and plastics itself. All cardboard packing materials have a recycled content ranging from70% to 100%, and plastic storage containers are predominantly recyclable polypropylene (our collapsible ones are in fact made from 100% recycled polypropylene). Loose fill packing material is made of a minimum 90% recycled polystyrene and all of our packing tissue paper is 50% recycled content. We’re currently looking into additional suppliers for biodegradable loose fill packing material to try to make this figure higher. You can find out more about this and our other sustainable initiatives by looking at Big Yellow’s website, which will be reviewed and updated on an annual basis.

Tips and Tricks: Store Wine Sideways

…Commercial wine self storage facilities charge a surprisingly minimal amount to let you sit back and relax at home while they take care of your wine bottles stored at the perfect temperature and humidity. The best thing that you can do to ensure that your bottles are kept safe is to store them lying on their sides so that the cork can be kept moist – this is what keeps air away from the liquid. Once the cork is dry, the wine will be oxidised and lose its quality.

Tips and Tricks: Over Packing

… Don’t attempt to pack more items into a box in order to pack it tightly and save on boxes. Doing this will lead to a box full of broken glass and hurt feelings! Instead, fill all loose space with any available soft item, even clothing if there’s nothing else available. Packing delicate items for self storage around a handful of clothing would save money and help ensure the safety of all delicate items.

Did You Know: Temporary Self Storage

…that most self-storage needs are in fact temporary instead of permanent? According to a recent poll on EasyStorageSearch.com (a directory of self storage facilities nationwide), the most common reason for people to seek out self-storage is a temporary need for more space. Of the 100 respondents, nearly half (43 percent) of those polled were looking for self storage for this reason and only fifteen people had a more permanent need for more space. Perhaps surprisingly, only 32 percent of storage seekers were moving: 16 respondents were making a local move, and 16 were moving cross-country. So during the recession, it would be easy to assume that people require storage due to a move, to take another job, or minimise living expenses. But this poll shows that this is far from the case. Big Yellow’s units can be used for just […]

Tips and Tricks: For Fragile Items

…use furniture drawers or the insides of large kitchen appliances as boxes for delicate items and specially label them as ‘FRAGILE’. Do the same for mirrors and pictures, using a protective covering like bubble wrap, then stack them on their ends. Never leave them flat, as even if you’re extra careful, something may fall on them and break the glass. Separate lamp bases and lampshades, then wrap them as you would any other small item. It is not recommended that you store loose photographs as they may curl or suffer from temperature damage whilst in self storage.

So much so that the £15m investment was supported by East of England Development Agency and Rural Development funding. The £15m facility at Wilbraham will be supplying all of the wheat for flour use Sainsbury’s bakeries, as well as other major brands. The 355 members of the co-operative will process 90,000 tonnes of locally grown wheat at the centre each year.
