Back To School: Reclaim Your Space

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

As the kids are preparing to start a new school year, it’s a great opportunity for you the reclaim the areas of the home. These spaces may have been taken over with toys and sports items throughout the summer holidays.

Shelving is one of the simplest storage solutions for your child’s belongings as they are kept together in one place. Children can easily find their things and will be able to see exactly where they need to be returned too. Not only are shelves convenient, they’re easy to assemble as they can be mounted directly onto your walls using an L-shaped bracket. The amount of shelving you use depends on the amount of space is available on the wall and the amount of things you need to be placed on them.

As children don’t need to store long clothing in a closet, you can gain extra storage space by lowering the clothing rod and adding an extra shelf above it. Not only will this provide extra storage space, but also the children will be able to reach their own clothes.

Toy bins and bin organisers are very useful for sorting toys into compartments and usually they don’t have lids so this will make it easy for children to access them. They’re a good choice for storing a collection of small toys and can easily rotate toys that are currently being played with one that aren’t.

Boxes are versatile as you can stack them and rearrange them to suit you and your children’s needs. They can often be used for storing larger toys that might not fit onto shelving, although play items can become lost or forgotten at the bottom of the box. You can be creative and give yourself more storage options by buying boxes of different shapes and sizes. They’re often decorative and if you were to use a wooden box you could put a cushion on top to make it a bench, as this is a useful way of hiding the storage.

Locating designated toy zones around the home will ensure that they don’t get cluttered around your living space. When you go to tidy their things up it will mean you don’t have to clean up every room in the house for clutter and as an added bonus you won’t have to go searching to find missing toy parts.

Donating unwanted toys is a great way of clearing the build up of items in their bedrooms and around the house. But sometimes toys are too precious and have too many memories to give away. READ International Uganda Update (Part 1)

Monday, September 6th, 2010

On the 22nd August READ International completed its latest mission in Uganda with the help of student volunteers from the University of Edinburgh. They were able to successfully distribute over 29,000 textbooks to primary and secondary schools in the Mubende and Masaka districts. At the same time they were also able to aid in the renovation of the Mubende Community Library.

When the team from Edinburgh arrived at the library it was a dark and gloomy building with a small number of books gathering dust in a storage cupboard. It was a large space so the team had to really get stuck in if they were to make a difference. The team showed the same enthusiasm that they demonstrated throughout the previous year when the team were collecting textbooks and raising money.

For the first time the town had a library that everyone could use which created a real buzz in the area. Youth engagement is a really important part of READ’s work so it was great for them to see groups of students from nearby secondary schools leading a hand helping the team and making the project a lot easier and more fun!

Stay tuned for news from the Mubende Community Library opening ceremony in part 2…

Tips & Tricks: How To Organise Your Garage

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Garages can fast become an area of your home where items just get thrown into simply because there’s no other place for them or they haven’t been organised properly. Sifting through these can be a real time investment purely because you may find bits and pieces that you forgot you even had! Here are some top storage solutions to keep your garage organised and stop it from becoming cluttered.

First of all you should divide your items into different sections depending on what you decide to keep, store or throw away which will help reduce the amount of items that you have to find a new home for and act as an incentive to clear out the junk.

Adding open or closed shelving to your garage will clear away many items such as small paint tins that get cluttered on the ground into a safer area. Which type of shelving you go for depends on what need to get out of the space as open shelves make it easier to find items and much easier to grab the ones you need. Closed shelving or cabinets may give your garage a cleaner look but can restrict lighting; you’ll also have to remember where you’ve stored items to make it work. Placing a label on the door listing the contents inside will make it easier for you to find what you’re looking for.

Bins are a useful garage storage solution for certain things such as sports equipment because footballs, rugby balls and cricket bats can be kept together without a great deal of effort. Small bins can group similar small items but avoid getting too many large bins for your garage as it will be easy to throw items in without organising them and will just build up with clutter.

For all those items that you don’t want to throw away but aren’t being used at the moment you can place these into self storage. To find out how you can benefit from self storage visit us in any of our stores or our Quote and Reserve online page to get started.

Did You Know You Can Store Files In The Cloud?

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Did you know you can store computer files online without them taking up space on your computer? When you store items online it’s called ‘Cloud Storage’ or ‘The Cloud’ and can often act as a cheaper alternative to buying additional hard drives for your computer.

What makes cloud storage so useful is if you’re connected to the internet, you can access your files. It doesn’t matter what your location is or what computer you’re using. There are different forms of cloud storage; private clouds, public and hybrid which make it easy to store documents for you and share with others if they’re too large to fit in an email.

Unfortunately Big Yellow can’t store your physical items in our ‘Cloud’ yet but you can store your household items in our self storage rooms for a little as a week, month, year or as long as you want. We only ask for seven days notice when you want to leave. If you’re interested to find out how you can benefit from our self storage facilities, visit our Quote and reserve online page to get started.

Armadillo Self Storage Sheffield Supports Rotherham Hospice

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Armadillo Self Storage Sheffield Parkway was delighted to aid Rotherham Hospice with their recent storage needs. They are gearing up to open a new shop in the area which will become the fifth store for the charity. It’s scheduled to open early this month and will sell a range of bargain items including clothes, cards, DVDs, toys and household goods.

As the Rotherham Hospice team prepares for the grand opening, Armadillo Self Storage has been able to donate free storage space to enable them to store donations safely and securely until the new store is ready to open. The stores are a very important source of income for the hospice as the contributions allow people to turn donated goods back into cash for the charity which supports people with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

The hospice is currently recruiting up to 20 volunteers to help run the new shop with some of the tasks being serving customers, sorting stock and maintaining the displays.

Tips & Tricks: How To Store Your Bicycle

Monday, July 26th, 2010

There are many different factors to take into consideration when storing your bike, such as how often you ride your bicycle, how much space you have at home and what the weather is like where you live. Here are some top tips to help you plan the way you store your bicycle and keep it in good condition.

You should always avoid suspending your bike from a single wheel rim from your garage ceiling as some wheels have ‘quick release’ which could send it crashing to the floor. The wheels aren’t strong enough to take the weight without bending and getting damaged.

Before you put your bicycle into storage it’s recommended that you keep the tyres inflated and check the pressure regularly. This can help extend tyre life by avoiding problems such as flattened rubber and cracks on the side of the tyres.

It’s best to store your bicycle indoors when you’re not using it as the sun’s rays can dry and crack the side of the tyres, especially during the winter when the weather is poor. When metal-frames are left outside the metal can get so cold that rust may form when condensation builds up inside the tubing.

The Big Yellow Armadillos Take On London To Brighton (Part.2)

Friday, July 16th, 2010

As we got closer to Brighton, we noticed there were lots of families on the streets all cheering and giving out much needed energy supplies to keep everyone going! The support was fantastic, the people that lined the streets probably didn’t know it but they helped so many people throughout the day.

Everyone was dreading the final point and they all knew it would come….Ditchling Beacon! We all had heard about it but none of them really expected what was about to come. Ditchling Beacon is a brutal mile long climb to the top of the South Downs that starts at mile 47, everything else compared to this was easy. The hill was so steep that many of the riders had to get off their bikes and push them to the top simply focusing on putting one foot ahead of the other. We were amazed to see people still cycling, trying to make it to the top!

Finally there was a man shouting over the microphone “that’s it you’ve made it, you are about to reach the top of Ditchling Beacon, you are now 234 metres above sea level”. We stopped at the top for a minute to look at the views which were amazing and so beautiful. After the agony of the Beacon the last 6 miles were a joy as the sea came into view and riders flew down the hill reaching speeds of 38mph.

After a final crawl through Brighton traffic the riders made their way down to Brighton Pier and all anyone could hear were the cheers of thousands of people. Finally the Finish Line was in sight, a sprint along the seafront brought to an end to epic ride.

In total over 30,000 riders took part on the day, setting off from Clapham at different times from 6am to 10am for the worthy causes of Cancer Research and the British Heart Foundation. In total staff members have raised approximately £7628 to date for Cancer Research and Big Yellow Self Storage will be matching this figure to boost donations.

A massive thank you goes to Paul Holmes for all his hard work in organising the team! We all had a fantastic time!

The Big Yellow Armadillos Take On London To Brighton (Part.1)

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

The annual London to Brighton bike ride on the south coast is a hugely popular event with almost 30,000 cyclists taking part and raising money for a very worthy cause. Riders begin their 54 mile journey in Clapham Common with many aiming to reach the seafront in just six hours. Cyclists range from keen enthusiasts to those taking part with friends and family in memory of people they had lost.

Our very own Big Yellow Armadillos cycling team took part. Made up from staff from stores nationwide, who raced down to Brighton weaving through Surrey and over the hills of West Sussex on Sunday 24th June to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation.

Join three of our riders, Jimmy Gibson, Patsy Loomes and Ardan Carter as they take on the London to Brighton below.

The sun rose over the Balham store at 7am to find 37 members of the Big Yellow Armadillos cycling team preparing for the 54 miles that was ahead of them, for the annual London to Brighton. Everyone was equipped with their yellow jerseys and numbers pinned to their shirts. The cold early morning air and warm up cycle soon had everyone awake and after a brief pause for the ‘before’ photo the team streamed from the store, as a river of yellow shirts made their way to the starting line.

As we set off on the journey to Brighton everyone was amazed to see so many riders, there were literally thousands of people riding through the streets of London. The early stages were relatively hill free and entirely painless; this perhaps set a false tone for what was to follow.

Weaving through the streets of South London eventually giving way to the leafier suburbs of Surrey the team encountered their first hill at which point the entire field promptly got off and walked! The bottle neck of bikes and riders clogged our path, whilst frustrating it gave us an opportunity for everyone to have a snack and ensured that nobody exerted themselves too much too soon.

We’d been cycling for what seemed like hours and the field began to start opening up along the roads with the Big Yellow shirts becoming a rarer and rarer sight. Some even started to think they had surely clocked up enough miles that they would be almost at Brighton by now. Their optimism was soon gone as we saw a lady on route and she cheered ‘well done, keep going your almost half way’! There was another 30 miles still to go!!!
