Did You Know That You Have Items Of Clothing That You Will Never Wear?

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Did you know that the average woman has 22 garments in her wardrobe that she will never wear but refuses to throw out? The average cost of unworn items left to take up space is £285 while men are no better as they hoard 19 items that they will never wear. Despite these items taking up valuable storage space, they’re rarely sorted.

It’s tough to decide what to throw out of your wardrobe but you need to be ruthless! Impulse buying is often the most common cause of wardrobe clutter as items seem like a good idea in the shop but when you get home they’re less appealing. Jeans are the most common item to be left unworn as well as tops that people would never be seen in. Many people refuse to throw out their clothes because they feel guilty about wasting money and hoard items just in case they wear them in the future.

Declutter Your Home Before The Spring Clean

Monday, February 7th, 2011

One way to banish the winter blues is to get your home ready for Spring and Summer. Spring cleaning is something many people hate but it’s a great time to sort out your belongings and freshen up your surroundings. Before you start cleaning there are many things you can to in preparation to make it go as smoothly as possible.

In each room of your home, break down the individual tasks that need to be completed in a list that you can check off. This could be to sort through the pile of magazines or to organise the cabinet. Once you’ve completed it you can tick it off your list as completed.

If you have a wardrobe of out-of-season clothes then this a great time to sort your old items before the new season. Instead of cramming all of your clothes into a small space, sort through the items that you no longer want. This will free up space and prevent your clothes from becoming wrinkled.

Instead of completing all of the tasks that need to be done yourself, you can distribute them to other members of your family. If you have young children then you could give something small for them to do such as sorting through some of their old toys. They could be sorted and together you can decide which ones to keep and which toys they may have grown out of.

Lastly, schedule when you are going to start your spring clean in your diary or on a calendar so you can give yourself plenty of time to prepare.

Big Yellow Space Savers Winners Roundup

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

Over the last few months we’ve been running our online ‘Space Savers’ game on our Facebook page which gave people the chance to win great prizes with the help of their friends. The final round ended on 31st January 2011 after a total of 131,612 items had been stored in virtual self storage rooms.

The aim of the game was to catch falling items from a moving van before they hit the ground. Once they had all been caught successfully players could then store and customise an item to go in their room. Each player could add one item per day which gave them a point on the leader board but the more friends they invited to play along and store items, the more points they scored.

The winners were Kelly Bourton, Emma Jacklin, Betty Blundell, Lea Grieveson, Cheryl Gauden and Margaret Richards who each grabbed a fantastic prize including an Apple iPad and the highly anticipated Nintendo 3DS. We would like to thank everyone who took part and stored an item in their virtual self storage room!

Tips & Tricks: Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions for Longer

Monday, January 31st, 2011

One resolution that is often made at the beginning of each year is to exercise more and get in shape, but this rarely lasts beyond January. Here are some top tips and tricks to keep your New Year’s Resolution going throughout the rest of the year.

Before you purchase any fitness equipment, look around your home for possible areas where it can be stored. You may need to rearrange furniture or even get rid of some to make sure it will all fit. Don’t forget about the extra space you will need that isn’t obvious at first glance, as some equipment will fold out onto the floor. Once you have an idea of the space available you can make a selection of possible equipment to have in your home.

You can still maintain your resolution of getting fit in the New Year without your home looking like a gym. By using the free space under your bed to store dumbbells or a yoga mat they can be kept out of sight but are ready to use when needed. You can also create an aerobic workout in your home when you declutter without the use of fitness equipment. Running up and down stairs between tasks will get your heart racing without the expensive cost of going to the gym.

Tips & Tricks: Storing New Christmas Gifts

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Christmas maybe over for another year but the gifts that you receive can often take a while to sort and find a place where they can be kept. Here are some top tips for you to find space in your home for new Christmas gifts.

A simple idea that quickly cuts down clutter after Christmas is that for every gift you receive, you dispose or store two. For example: if you’re given an item of new clothing, you can take out two items that you no longer wear or are out of season before you place it in your wardrobe. You will be freeing up space in your home as you’re putting away gifts. Whether you decide to recycle, donate or store old items, each new gift will reduce clutter and keep you organised.

Children’s rooms can often become cluttered after Christmas and the floor space can get filled with the new toys. They will often they go through stages of liking different toys and still have their favourites. By keeping the most used toys in a place that’s easy for them to find and put back you can make sure that they’re not left in other areas of your home. An additional idea is to set up a toy zone where certain items are allowed but can’t be stored elsewhere.

Mountain Trek In Support Of Cash For Kids

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

Derek from our Armadillo Dundee store was recently asked to accompany Cash for Kids coordinator, Alison Carr on a Mountain Trek in the High Tatras Mountains, Poland. The purpose of the trek was to raise as much money as possible for the Radio Tay – Cash for Kids Charity which the Dundee store is heavily involved with. Cash for Kids supports thousands of children across the North East of the UK who suffer abuse or neglect, are disabled and have special needs or simply need a little extra care or guidance.

The trip lasted 9 days, which included 5 days of mountain trekking and living in the High Tatras Mountain range. Each day involved around 7 hours of walking and the occasional rock climbing at the steeper parts, to reach peaks of around 2000 meters. Day 5 of the trek was the longest as it took around 10 hours to climb the summit of Mount Rhyss, which is 2499 meters high and is the highest peak in Eastern Europe.

Derek said “Despite never doing anything like this before, the whole experience was amazing and most importantly I managed to raise £670.00 for our local Cash for Kids Charity which I am delighted about.”

Well done Derek!

The Toy Appeal is celebrating its 21st anniversary and each year they have been helping children from disadvantaged families celebrate Christmas. The local community can donate gifts, which will then be wrapped in our store and given to children as presents.

Last year the Toy Appeal successfully gave Christmas gifts to 279 children living in the area of Tunbridge Wells, with many of the presents donated by local residents, shops and stores, as well as local churches, schools and other organisations.

Sponsored Walk For Cash For Kids

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Staff members from Big Yellow Bramall Lane, Armadillo West Bar and Parkway have all taken part in a sponsored walk to raise money for Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids appeal. The aim of the Cash for Kids appeal is to ensure that every child in South Yorkshire and North Midlands wakes up to a gift on Christmas morning.

The team has walked ‘miles for smiles’ and managed to raise £325 for the cause. Another way for people to get involved is to buy new and unwrapped gifts and donate them at selected stores in the area.

Every year there are thousands of children across the region that wake up on Christmas morning with no presents to open. To find out how you can help the cause visit Hallam FM’s Cash For Kids website here.
