Win An Xbox 360 With Big Yellow Self Storage!

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

We have launched the fourth round of our Big Yellow Space Savers Facebook game after Betty Blundell won a Fujifilm 14 megapixel camera after storing 549 items in their virtual self storage room.

In Round 4 we’re giving you the chance to win the latest Xbox 360 console and a ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1’ game when you store items with the help of your friends. To be in with a chance of winning you need to store as many items as possible into your virtual self storage room. You can increase the amount of points you earn by inviting your friends to play along as you will gain points when they store items.

To store an item in the game, you must catch falling objects from a moving van before they hit the ground. Once you’ve caught all of the objects you’ll then be able to select and customise an item to store. Each player can add one item per day which will give you a point on the leader board but the more friends you invite to store items, the more points you can score each day. You will be able to see your friends’ items in your virtual self storage room as well.

To take part in Big Yellow Space Savers and get your hands on an Xbox 360 console and a ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 game’, all you have to do is head over to http://bit.ly/spacesavers and start filling your virtual self storage room!

The Voice Of Arbourthorne Project

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Recently our Sheffield Bramall Lane store had the opportunity to supply The Sheffield School of Architecture and Arbourthorne Community Primary School with cardboard boxes to use as construction material. The Sheffield School of Architecture has a unique formula whereby it sends its students out into the real world to work with real clients and briefs as part of their course.

For this particular project the client was Arbourthorne Community Primary School, which has the aim of encouraging positive behaviour in education, as well as wider society in general. They would be working together to create a structure that represents the culture of positive behaviour.

Many of the children from Arbourthorne Community Primary School act as mediators in their break-times to help take the load off their teachers. A workshop was arranged for the kids to help design a structure that could be used as area of mediation to be transported through their local community and the city centre as a beacon of positivity.

A full-scale prototype has been manufactured from the shelter that the children designed and has been displayed in Sheffield city centre. The whole journey from the workshops to the construction process has been documented and a short film has been produced with the purpose being of celebrating the children as positive role models for the local community and wider city.

At Big Yellow Self Storage we have been enthusiastic supporters of the project and you can see the finished cardboard shelters below.

How To Start Your Own Collection

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

People collect things for many different reasons. For some it is a hobby, others are continuing a family tradition and many do it to make money. If you would like to start your own collection, first decide what you want to collect and why. For example there would be no point in collecting restaurant napkins because you think it will make you millions. Aiming to get rich is a risky reason to begin a collection, there are no guarantees that you will be in profit and you could end up losing cash.

To make money from a collection you have to acquire something which other people desire and will pay for. Art and antiques can be very prosperous but often need a high investment in the first place. Unless you consider yourself to be an expert in your chosen field, it would be wise to steer away from collecting anything with the sole aim of making money.

If you want to start a collection as a hobby, or because you are passionate about something, then it is very easy to get started. If you don’t know what you would like to collect, begin by writing a list of things that you’re interested in.

Top Tip: think of objects which you have always been fascinated by, whether it is china dolls, foreign coins, or postcards. Go through the list and cross out anything that would be too difficult to get hold of or is out of your financial reach. Make the final decision by looking through your options and deciding which would be the most satisfying and fun.

Keep an eye out wherever you go for items which would add to your collection. Start regularly attending car boot and jumble sales as well as charity shops. Ask your friends and family to look through their belongings to see if they have anything which would be relevant – if they know what you are collecting they might also spot things for you.

The internet is a brilliant tool for collectors, with many sites dedicated to particular collector’s items. Search online and browse through the different items available to buy, or even check out forums to talk to other collectors who share your passion.
Make a start by checking out the sites below.

World Collectors Net is a brilliant site which has hundreds of categories of different collectible items as well as message boards to communicate with like minded collectors.

Collectors Club Of Great Britain offers information on upcoming antique & collectors fairs, auctions and listings of regional collectors clubs. There is also an online forum which enables you to chat with other collectors.

Ebay is also a brilliant tool to use to make sure you are not paying too much for something in particular. Make sure you regularly check Ebay and similar bidding sites as new pieces are auctioned every week.

You should also make some room in your home for your collection or buy some appropriate storage solutions for your new artefacts. For typically collected items such as stamps, coins, die-cast cars etc there are a range of special containers to keep your pieces in. If you are collecting ornaments, toys or dolls decide whether or not you want to display them, and create an appropriate space or shelving accordingly. There are more ideas on how to store collectibles in the Tips and Tricks section of our blog.

If you need to make more space for your new hobby, or need somewhere secure to store any valuable collector’s items you may get your hands on, visit Big Yellow Self Storage in store or online. You can rent our self storage rooms for as little as a week, month, year or as long as you like. And you only have to give us seven days notice when you want to leave. Tips & Tricks: What To Do If You’re Moving Abroad

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Moving to another country can be extremely exciting but can also be very stressful if you don’t have everything under control – follow these tips and tricks to ensure your move goes smoothly:

To pack your things for shipping, use sturdy boxes and label each side so you know what is in every box, making it easier to unpack in your new home. For a full range of boxes and packing equipment visit our Boxes Etc page or visit your local Big Yellow store.

Keep all the things you will need to access immediately separate such as passports, travel documents and tickets. Shipping can take a few weeks, so ensure you pack enough clothes and necessities in your suitcase so you can access your essentials from the minute you arrive in your new country.

If you are downsizing your home, then you will have to get rid of some of your belongings, or use storage for the things that you don’t want to throw away. Large electrical items such as fridges, washing machines, dishwashers etc may be quite expensive to ship out and it is likely that your new home will already be fitted with these. If you do not want to get rid of these appliances, consider putting them in self storage.

At Big Yellow Self Storage you can be sure your belongings will be safe. Not only do we have 24 hour digital CCTV, but every room has its own alarm for your piece of mind. We have coded electronic gates, perimeter fencing, smoke detectors and fire alarms to protect your belongings. To find out how you could benefit from self storage go to Quote and Reserve Online or visit us in store.

Make Some Space, Make Some Money

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

You don’t have to be David Dickenson to spot a valuable item in your home. Having a good search around your home may uncover some precious heirlooms you’ve previously overlooked. Most garages, lofts and sheds are crammed full of belongings, clearing out these spaces could have you laughing all the way to the bank.

There are countless success stories of people finding antique items in their homes worth hundreds or even thousands of pounds. Ian and Lynda Spires from Milton Keynes uncovered some old railway signs in their loft, worth an amazing £20,000. The signs were being used as make shift flooring.

Even if you don’t find a rare antique or priceless collector’s item in your house, it is a good opportunity to de-clutter areas which are getting a bit untidy. You will benefit from having more space in your home and it will be much easier to find your belongings when you need them.

Making a start can be difficult, as de-cluttering can be a daunting task. Tackle one room at a time and divide each room into sections to break up the workload. Set aside enough time to tackle each section and make sure you have everything you need to assist you before you start – like boxes, rubbish bags and cleaning products.

Have a good look through all of your drawers, shelves and cupboards. Keep an eye out for any unusual or old items – and if you find anything of interest, put it to one side to be valued later. Make you sure you organise everything neatly when you put it back.

Utilise certain areas for storage of items used less often, such as under the bed, the top of your wardrobe or under the stairs. Use storage boxes and vacuum packs to store these items tidily. At Big Yellow, we sell a range of boxes and vacuum bags in store and online, go to our Boxes Etc page to find out more.

Anything which is no longer useful should be donated to charity, or as a last resort taken down the local tip. For anything that you don’t want in your home but still want to keep, consider using self storage.

At Big Yellow Self Storage we have a range of self storage rooms available from 9 sq ft to 400 sq ft and you can easily access your things seven days a week. To find out more visit our Quote and Reserve Online page.

Get Inspired To Clear Out Your Home During National Declutter Week!

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

National Declutter Week kicks off this Saturday 23 October until Sunday 31 October and is a great chance for the entire nation to get rid of some rubbish.

With the kids off school for half term and Christmas just around the corner, there has never been a better time to make a start on decluttering. Set aside a day to clear out your home and realise the benefit of a clutter free home.

Big Yellow Self Storage has taken inspiration from National Declutter Week and compiled five top tips for de-cluttering your home from our self storage blog archive:

1. Tackle the task section by section, otherwise it can seem too overwhelming. Ensure you finish each part before you move on to the next

2. Throw out all the bottles, toothbrushes and soaps etc which are old or empty and only keep the essential toiletries on display in your bathroom

3. Keep a basket by the front door for shoes which are worn everyday and put any shoes which are worn less often away in the wardrobe or under the bed

4. Be ruthless when clearing out your wardrobe – if you have not worn an item for over a year, sell it or donate it to charity

5. Install good habits into your children; make them throw out an old toy every time they get something new

As National Declutter Week coincides with half term, it would be a good idea to get the children to help out. Give them each a small task and reward them once they have completed their job, with a treat or a trip out to the park or cinema. Remind your children that they will be getting lots of new toys for Christmas and encourage them to donate toys which they no longer use to charities. You could turn decluttering into a game if you have more than one child, challenging them to see who can find the most toys to give away.

Whilst the children are busy clearing their clutter, use the time to tidy one of the rooms in the house. Label four boxes with a marker: ‘keep’, ‘sell’, ‘donate’ and ‘throw out’. For all the items that you cannot bear to part with, consider using self storage.

Big Yellow Self Storage can help with all your storage needs, whether you would like to rent one of our self storage rooms or just need some extra storage boxes or vacuum storage bags to store your stuff in. Visit us in store or order online at our online box shop.

Did You Know The Most Money Made In A UK Auction Is £153 Million?

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Did you know that in June this year an impressionist’s art sale fetched £152.6 million, beating the record for the most money ever made in a UK auction? The highlight of the sale at the London auction house, Christies was a 1903 painting by Pablo Picasso. The piece, named ‘Portrait of Angel Fernandez De Soto’, (also known as ‘The Absinthe Drinker’), sold for £34.7 million.

Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Art Foundation, a charity set up by the British composer to promote art, culture and heritage in Britain, bought the artwork for £19 million in 1995. They attempted to sell the painting at Christies in New York in 2006 but the auction was called off due to controversy over the ownership. Julius Schoeps, who is Jewish, claimed his family had owned the painting, but had been forced to sell it by the Nazis. Lord Lloyd Webber’s Foundation contested this claim and the court eventually ruled in their favour, saying it could not be sued by Professor Schoeps because he was not appointed to represent his relatives’ estate.

It seems that all high profile art is recession proof. A sculpture by Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti was sold in February this year at Southby’s in London for a world record breaking £65 million. The sculpture named ‘L’Homme qui Marche’ which depicts a grimly determined walking man, broke records as the most expensive piece of artwork ever sold.

At Big Yellow Self Storage we understand the importance of looking after your valuables. Not only do we have 24 hour digital CCTV, but every self storage room has its own alarm. Big Yellow Self Storage & The Gadget Show Team Up For Record Breaking Giant Game Of Tetris

Friday, October 15th, 2010

The Gadget Show has created a gigantic Tetris game to beat a world record in a show which aired on Monday night. The Channel Five show set a new Guinness World Record for the largest game of Tetris ever played. The programme produced a spectacular instillation using boxes donated by Big Yellow Self Storage, with bright lights inside every box.

The 1984 game, which involves moving and rotating shaped blocks to fit into lines, was recreated using 200 of Big Yellow’s extra large storage boxes making a grid of 105.7 metre squared.

Presenters Ortis Deley, Suzi Perry, Pollyanna Woodward and Jon Bentley controlled the game on the ground by stamping on directional pressure pads, whilst Jason Bradbury oversaw the game from a cherry picker, shouting directions to his fellow team members.

To beat the previous record, the technology show’s presenters needed to complete more than four lines of the grid at the NEC exhibition centre in Birmingham, they succeeded by clearing a total of 9 lines!

The record attempt was the final task in the special ‘challenge’ episode. Other missions involved presenters building rideable lawnmowers in just 60 minutes which Jon Bentley then raced against the British Lawn Mower Association’s reigning champions. The team visited a golf course to try for a hole in one as well as compete against Britain’s Got Talent star Tobias Mead in a video game challenge.

Tips & Tricks: How To Store Your Collectibles

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Collections can be exciting and fun and, in moderation, displays of collected items can provide a nice decor for your home. However, collections can easily get out of hand and could end up making your house look like a charity shop. If this is the case, it might be time to consider putting some of your stuff away. Storing your collectibles is an important part of organising your collection and keeping it safe. We have compiled some tips and tricks for the best way to store your memorabilia.

Depending on what you collect, you may be able to incorporate collectibles with your decor by displaying items on walls or shelves. To avoid exhibiting the entire collection at once, put some items into storage and then rotate them every few months to ensure your walls don’t look too cluttered.

For items which are not being displayed it is important to store them correctly so they do not get damaged by water, mould, temperature extremes and insects. Buy archival quality containers for items which are extremely old or valuable. There are special containers for pretty much everything from old stamps and maps to vintage books. For photos and albums, ensure you put archival quality paper between photographs to prevent them from sticking together and seal them in an airtight plastic bag to prevent any moisture getting in.

For fragile ornaments and mementos use the same-size boxes for easy stacking. Wrap each item separately with clean paper (top tip: do not use newspaper as the print can transfer). Pack items firmly next to each other, but not too tightly. Reinforce the bottom and top of the boxes with extra tape. Fill empty spots in the box with packing chips. Mark boxes as fragile and label all boxes and containers for easy reference. We sell a wide range of boxes and packing supplies in store and online, go to Boxes Etc to find out more.

Before packing anything away, create an inventory for all of your stuff so you know what is in each container and box. Whether your collection is purely sentimental or very valuable, you may want to consider keeping it protected in a secure environment.

At Big Yellow Self Storage we provide 24 hour digital CCTV and every self storage room has its own alarm for your own peace of mind. We also have coded electronic gates, perimeter security fencing, smoke detectors and fire alarms to protect your belongings. Visit our Quote and reserve online page to find out how you can benefit from self storage.
