John from Armadillo Self Storage in Hull recently attended in a rugby league tournament, which was held in memory of Tim Sage, popular Rugby League player for Hull KR, and amateur teams Beverley and Eureka.
Tim tragically died from cancer just before Christmas, leaving a wife who had just had her 12 week scan for her baby, now their beautiful daughter Hannah. The event aimed to raise money for the “Saggy” trust, and Armadillo’s own charity, Life for a Kid.
The tournament was held at Hull Rugby Union Club, and four teams participated, which involved all of Tim’s previous clubs and the Great Britain All-Stars, including Great Britain international players such as Paul Newlove, Andy Gregory, Gary Divorty and Anthony Sullivan.
The turnout for the tournament exceeded everyone’s expectations, with at least 1,500 people attending and queues for entry still forming two hours after the tournament had commenced.
With the Armadillo logo emblazoned on their now infamous shirts, the international players were more than happy to pose for photos with John and listen to the reasons why they had this unique addition to their kits.
In all, the tournament was an incredible success, however it is too early to tell the exact amount that was raised for the charities. The day was a fantastic way of seeing Armadillo’s charity work in action, and it is safe to say that the publicity raised for Life for a Kid, has been invaluable.
Armadillio are proud to support Life for a Kid, all from a chance meeting with founder Dean Hoggard, who was enquiring about the cost of storage space. To find out more about ‘Life for a Kid’ please visit their website at www.lifeforakid.com.

We are already half way through summer, and the party season is in full swing, with garden furniture coming out at every opportunity. However, what with the disappointing weather it’s nearly that time again for the age old question of where to store the garden furniture.
The problem with the traditional methods of storage such as the garden shed, or just left covered in the corner of the garden is that when you come back to it next summer, it is likely that you will find it covered in rust or mould, and that it has to be thrown out.
Big Yellow Self Storage could prove to be an economical way to store your garden furniture, rather than replacing it each year. Our Self Storage units will guarantee prevention of rust or mould developing as each room is dry, clean and safe from undesirable weather conditions.
If you are worried about the costs of the length of storage for a year, just check our website for the latest deals as you can get discounts for renting the unit in certain blocks of time, and there is no maximum time limit either.
If it is just your garden furniture you want to store we can accommodate for this as our rooms come in a range of sizes starting from 10 sq foot going all the way up to 500 sq foot. You also have the option to increase the unit space if you find you have more items to add in the future.
Please visit www.bigyellow.co.uk/quote-and-reserve/ to get a free and quick online quote, and let us help you save your garden furniture, and some pennies!

It’s great to overhaul and organise your wardrobe during this time of year as part of your Spring cleaning and by getting your wardrobe ready for the summer you can ensure that winter items aren’t taking up valuable storage space. Here are some top tips to spring clean your wardrobe.
First of all, clear out any winter jumpers and jackets to make space for summer clothing as you won’t need these again until Autumn. If you have space underneath your bed you can place them in airtight plastic boxes or in vacuum space bags to make sure that they stay in good condition. Alternatively if you’re short on space you could place them in one of our self storage rooms.
If you’re finding clothes that you haven’t worn in a while, be ruthless especially if you have a small wardrobe and donate to charity or give to someone else who you think might be interested.
Once you have sorted what stays and what should be stored, you can keep your wardrobe free from clutter by organising your clothes by category. Keeping shirts, dresses and jackets together will make it easier for you to find what you want later.
If you’re in need of storage items including vacuum space bags or want to find out how you can benefit from self storage visit www.bigyellow.co.uk to get started.

Warwick Sleigh, who works for the Big Yellow Wandsworth store is hoping to raise £15,000 in support of St George’s Hospital dedicated charity, First Touch, which helps fund its equipment and staff initiatives. Forgetting what you have in your wine cellar could be a thing of the past thanks to the Cellar and Open Cellar applications available for your iPod and the Open Cellar software for your home computer.
Cellar is an iPhone, iPod or iPad application, which is designed to help you organise your wine collection wherever and whenever you like. The application acts as a swipeable showcase of your wine rack. You can categorise your wine bottles, edit what is in your cellar and browse through your collection.
Any bottles you have removed to drink or sell can be discarded to the ‘Garage’. This feature recognises that the particular bottles are no longer a part of your collection, but saves them in the Garage for future reference.
Don’t have an iPhone? Not a problem!
Open Cellar is an equally useful programme, which you can download for free onto your Mac or PC. You can also purchase the ‘Open Cellar’ app for your iDevice, which can be used alone or can be synchronised with the computer software.
The application allows you to organise your wines and provides information on where each bottle is produced, who it’s produced by, specific attributes and value. You can rate every bottle and add purchasing and taste notes for personal reference.
There is an option to build multiple racks and the application can show you the exact location of each bottle in your cellar, allowing you to find your wines quickly and easily. Touching a specific bottle on the screen displays a summary of the wine and highlights where matching bottles are positioned in your cellar. There is also an online database where you can back up your wine catalogue information, so you will never lose your records.
At Big Yellow Self Storage we know the importance of storing wine properly. At our flagship store in Fulham we offer specialist, climate controlled wine storage rooms which you can access 7 days a week. To find out more information about how you could benefit from wine storage visit The Wine Cellars section of our website.

Making use of the space under your bed is a great storage solution, it’s also an area which is often forgotten about. The area can be used for items that aren’t used regularly such as out of season clothes, shoes and bedding. Whether you have drawers or a raised bed, a little creativity and a few simple storage solutions can transform an empty area into an indispensible storage space.
One of the best storage solutions for underneath the bed is vacuum storage bags as they come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
They can be filled with sweaters, clothes and any other soft items, then by using a vacuum cleaner you can easily suck the air from the bags which reduces them to a compact storable size. The deflated bags can then stored underneath the bed and even stacked together to maximise the space you have available.
There are always more traditional storage containers such as clear plastic bins that can be used to store bulk items. They come in different sizes depending on the space you have available to use and can easily slide from beneath your bed.
For all of your storage needs including storage boxes and vacuum storage bags visit us in store or order online at our online box shop.

Making tough decisions about what clothes to keep can be the hardest part of de-cluttering your wardrobe and many people are afraid that they might throw out something they’ll want in the future. As a result wardrobes can become your own personal indoor storage sheds which house all the old, off season and mismatched things you can’t bear to throw away. Indecision is what causes clutter to build-up and often leads people to hoarding clothes that they would no longer wear, but keep just in case.
Keeping all your clothing may seems to be the easiest option but if you can replace the thought of “I’ll get into this someday” with, “I’ll get new things when I lose weight” as an extra incentive and you’ll be on the right path.
Here’s some top tips on how to tackle the mountain in your wardrobe:
1. Start at the top of your wardrobe, pick a shelf and take out all of the items. Be hard on yourself because if you haven’t worn an item of clothing in over a year, it’s unlikely that you ever will in the future. If other items don’t fit you can give them away, donate to charity or keep in a self storage room.
2. When your wardrobe is empty, clean the shelves, walls and the floor to freshen up the area before you put sorted clothes back in. Once you have done that, start organising your clothes by everyday items, colour and by the length. If there are items that you wear more frequently than others you can place them in an area where it’s easily accessible for you.
3. For every new item of clothing that you add to your wardrobe, be sure to remove an old item so it won’t take up valuable space. It will also ensure that your wardrobe doesn’t get re-cluttered and stays manageable.
You can even maximise your wardrobe space by keeping your out of season items elsewhere and rotating them. We have wardrobe boxes that help to make storing clothes easy. To find out how you can benefit from storing your clothing in our self storage rooms at any of our stores, visit our Quote and Reserve Online page to get started.

It was this time last year that we won a Sunday Times 100 Best Companies To Work For accolade. Guess what? We’ve just won again, but this year we placed even higher! We’re now sitting pretty at number 25, up 43 spots from 68. Even though the economic downturn has created a knock on effect on the self storage industry, our company culture of involving our staff at all levels and rewarding them has contributed to better results and continued growth.
For those who don’t know, the Best Companies organisation was formed with the purpose of making the world a better workplace and has established its reputation through an authoritative and highly rigorous methodology. Each year its media partner, The Sunday Times, publishes the top 100 scoring companies. Their site inspections and workforce survey identifies workplace performance and best practice according to eight key factors. These factors are particularly significant as they are defined through survey results from employees – straight from the horse’s mouth if you like!
Leadership
How employees feel about the head of the organisation, senior managers, and the organisations values and principles
My Manager
How employees feel about and communicate with their direct manager
Personal Growth
What employees feel about training and their future prospects
Wellbeing
How employees feel about stress, pressure at work, and work life balance
My Team
Employees feelings towards their immediate colleagues and how well they work together
Giving Something Back
The extent to which employees feel their organisation has a positive impact on society
My Company
The level of engagement employees have for their job and organisation
Fair Deal
How happy employees are with their pay and benefits
To see how we ranked against the other 99 and what our staff members had to say visit The Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For online here.
Many thanks goes out to our Head of Human Resources, Cheryl Hathaway and our brilliant staff members – without whom this wouldn’t be possible.

It really doesn’t take long to clean up your home when you’ve got an end goal in mind. If you are about to put your home on the market, then you should know that it becomes all the more important for you to make the space inviting. It’s a lot like presenting a blank canvas to a new family. Letting them see the potential for how they can make it their own – instead of getting distracted by what’s already there.
And when you are giving people the tour of your home, the last thing that you are going to want to do is make it look a lot smaller by failing to clear out any extra items.
Almost every home shows better with less furniture. Remove pieces of furniture that block or hamper paths and walkways and put them in storage. Since your bookcases are now empty, store them. Remove extra leaves from your dining room table to make the room appear larger. Leave just enough furniture in each room to showcase the room’s purpose and plenty of room to move around. You don’t want buyers scratching their heads and saying, “What is this room used for?”
What’s more, when you see those offers start coming in, you are going to thank yourself for taking the extra time to clean everything up.
