The Little Legs Company
The Little Legs Company is an online store selling a range of unique baby and children's wear. It was set up by new mum, Helen Cockle, who was frustrated by the limited choice of quirky and quality children's wear available. Seeing a gap in the market, Helen left the world of recruitment to set up the business in 2010.
Helen originally operated The Little Legs Company from her home, but the nature of the apparel business meant she needed to order stock in bulk ahead of every season and it was quickly overtaking her living space. She says: "I live in a typical London home, so we don't have the luxury of storage space. Soon I was forced to navigate around boxes of stock which was becoming a nightmare – especially with a young child."
After a few months Helen's situation was becoming untenable, so she looked into the option of self storage. After recommendations from friends, Helen visited her local Big Yellow Self Storage in Balham and was immediately impressed by the bright, modern building. "Alternative self storage facilities I'd visited were in draughty, ageing buildings which didn't give me confidence that my valuable stock would be secure."
As a start-up business, knowing she could scale the size of her storage room up or down when needed without a penalty fee was also reassuring.
Helen was sold. The Little Legs Company moved into a 15 sq. foot room and three years later has expanded into a space almost ten times the size. As well as storing her stock there, Helen uses the space to pack up all of her orders before posting them. Like many businesses, the out-of-hours access offered by Big Yellow has been invaluable – this became particularly apparent when Helen launched a pop up shop in Wandsworth alongside the online store in 2011 and needed the flexibility to access her goods outside of the usual 9-5.
"As well as the reassurance that my stock is safe and I can access it at times that suit me, Big Yellow offer extras that make running a growing business easier. The store can sign for parcels on my behalf, for example, so I don't have to wait around all day for a delivery to arrive – perfect for a busy mum like me."
"I originally went in search of some extra space, but Big Yellow has almost become a partner, enabling me to grow the business. Consumer response has been so positive that I've now taken on a business partner, Helen Gilbert, to help keep up with orders and take The Little Legs Company to the next step."
