Did You Know: Childhood Memories

…that many people use their self-storage units to recreate their youth? One particular Swiss gentleman moved as much of the contents of his home as he could when he moved to another area. However, the most treasured item to be stored was a box of dust. Why so, you ask? Well, its scent reminded him perfectly of the slightly musty smell that belonged to the home he’d grown up in. Just sniffing it brought back floods of memories, which he decided to put to good use and replicated his original house exactly in a scaled down model within his unit. We can’t promise you’ll find the exact smell of your childhood within one of our stores, but if you’d like to try and recreate it, we’ve got spaces that range from 10 sq ft to 500 sq ft or more, […]

Tips and Tricks: Electronic Equipment

…Try to store all your electronic equipment in their original boxes. For the sake of saving space, buy similar sized boxes if you’ve lost the originals. Otherwise, wrap them as if you were wrapping glass or crystal (with extra layers of foam and then placed into a larger box). Never wrap computers or electronic devices in plastic for long term self storage as it traps moisture in and fosters mildew growth. Protect monitors, screens, scanner glass and other fragile parts with cardboard or pieces of bubble wrap or foam and tape. Mark glass parts as fragile to avoid leaning heavy objects against them.

Tips and Tricks: Storing Mattresses

… Wrap your mattresses in the special bags available at most supermarkets and DIY stores. These not only prevent them from losing shape but protect them from absorbing moisture as well. Use a dehumidifier to draw out excess moisture from the unit you use if needed, but the self-storage facility should already be temperature controlled to prevent this. Check on the mattress occasionally to see if it needs adjustments to storage conditions. If you store it for longer than a year, change the plastic covering once annually.

Tips and Tricks: Wooden Furniture

… Before placing any kind of wooden furniture into self storage, wax well with wood varnish. This prevents moisture from affecting the wood. Likewise, if your furniture can be dismantled easily, then do so as it will prolong the life of that piece. If you dismantle furniture, collect the nuts and bolts of each item into a plastic bag and tape it firmly to the dismantled set. In addition, place thick cloth such as old carpets between wooden pieces to prevent them scratching one another.

Did You Know: Loft Conversion

Did You Know: Loft Conversion

that a New-York based couple spent almost $1 million dollars renovating a 1,500-square-foot loft because she had a ‘Zen aesthetic’ and wanted everything stored away, whereas he had a fear of empty space? The couple hired a collaborative of designers to attempt to come up with a solution that would allow her books and his thousands of musical belongings, which includes 200 instruments, to be out of sight. Thanks to 80 linear feet of cabinetry that now houses their collections (leaving the loft clutter-free), they have their own individual territories. One half of their house reflects a compromise of sorts: the music room can be enlarged or compressed as needed because the rear wall of the room is hung on a track system and can roll farther back in the bedroom to open up the loft for a party of […]

Tips and Tricks: Spread out Weight

…Don’t put too much weight into one box, try to pick it up after loading every other item to check its weight. If it seems too heavy, simply divide the contents into two self storage boxes. Remember that though the box may seem sturdy, it won’t be able to withstand a lot of weight. Keep this in mind particularly when boxing up books, magazines and other paper files, they are easy to pack, but do not overload them. Did You know: Ancient Storage

Did You know: Ancient Storage

…that more than 1,000 years before humans began to mass-produce grains for food, they were building sophisticated storage buildings to hold the wild grains they were cultivating? Collecting large quantities of grains is key to surviving as a community, but requires a system to store the perishables so they can be kept for long periods of time. The new find represents the oldest known storage system or granary to date; about 11,300 years old. They were discovered in the settlement of Dhra (near the Dead Sea in Jordan) and were about nine feet high, had mud floors and walls of stone bricks. Nowadays, you can leave storing the perishables to the professionals, but come to us for almost anything else! You can use Big Yellow’s self-storage units by the week, month, year or as long as you require.
