Did You Know : DIY Costs

Did You Know : DIY Costs

So how much does DIY Cost? And is it really advisable to do something like a loft conversion all by yourself? Here are some of the real facts of DIY: 1) Try some thrifty alternatives to more traditional interior (and exterior design) by using DIY. For example ceramic flowers pots in the garden can be overpriced. Why not turn something else into a flower pot? Not only does it save you money, it’s also recycling and it looks cool and arty. Old food cans (especially treacle tins), leaky watering cans and wellington boots and even (if you’re a bit more daring) your old car can all be used to house flowers. Go here to see how you can make a plant pot out of a tea pot. 2) You can actually calculate how much an extension will cost on helpful […]

Tips and Tricks: Laying out a room

Tips and Tricks: Laying out a room

Working out how to set up a room can be something of a challenge, but it can also be a lot of fun. So, Big Yellow Storage have put together yet another array of our Tips and Tricks to see you through and let you enjoy the experience… 1. The first thing you’ll need is some graph paper, pencils and a measuring tape. Measure out the parameters of the room and draw them up to scale. Then photocopy the drawing (or just copy it out again) and draw in your furniture (also to scale). Don’t be afraid to go a little crazy, you can always scrap inefficient ideas at this point. 2. Another good tip is to remember that, while a floor plan is very important, an elevation plan is just as critical. An elevation plan deals with the different […]

Tips and Tricks: Looking after works of art

Tips and Tricks: Looking after works of art

Do you have special pieces of artwork at home that you’re terrified to touch in case you damage them? If so, then this list is for you! We’ve put together some of our most useful Tips and Tricks to help keep those pieces future proofed and we really hope they help. 1. Always be very careful when cleaning a painting. The best option is to go to a professional, especially if the painting is old or valuable. 2. Keep sculptures indoors unless you’re sure they’ve been treated to be resistant to adverse weather and UV rays. (Granite and cement sculptures are, however, fine outdoors. As are bronze pieces if they’re waxed at least once a year). 3. When moving a painting around your house, plan out your route before hand and check for protruding objects that might damage the artwork […]

Big Yellow boxes up some help!

Big Yellow boxes up some help!

Big Yellow Self Storage Ilford uses their space to help people in need again. On August 3rd a fire ripped through a flat in Ilford. One of the occupants was hospitalized with spinal injuries following a dramatic leap from the window to safety. The fire was finally put out with the help of 30 fire fighters. Having seen the dramatic pictures in last week’s Recorder, Assistant manager Charlotte Mier felt compelled to offer as much help as possible and despite having already used up the store’s charity budget arranged a free storage room and boxes. After the blaze, the partner of the woman, understood to still be in hospital this week recovering from spinal injuries, said: “Fortunately, we are both alive, which is most important, but I would like to give out my personal thank you to the community for […]

They’ve done it!

Congratulations to the Big Yellow Fellows! The team including Mike FitzGerald (the team leader), Richard Shubrook, Paul Holmes, Luke McLaughlin and Stephanie Cartwright rode 191 miles visiting 34 Big Yellow Self Storage stores within the M25. The team finally arrived at Big Yellow Romford at 10pm at the end of day two after completing just over 28 hours and 30 minutes of cycling. The ride was definitely an adventure with Mike FitzGerald saying ‘so after just under 200miles, four punctures, two broken bikes, two crashes, one water damaged phone and one sore bottom due to an unfortunate incident with some stinging nettles…we did it!’ Unfortunately, Richard Shubrook suffered some broken spokes, cycling through Crystal Palace between the Beckenham and West Norwood stores on day one and much to his dismay found himself out of the challenge. All this is in […]

Did You Know that keeping a clean house can reduce your allergy symptoms?

Did You Know that keeping a clean house can reduce your allergy symptoms?

Did you know that you can control and even reduce your allergy symptoms just by having a clean house? There are an estimated 5.1 million people in the UK that suffer from asthma which is most commonly triggered by an allergy to the house dust mite which reside in the buildup of dust in your home. In order to illuminate these, use allergy proof covers on cushions and bed linen or replace all carpets and rugs with wooden floorings. A simple and less expensive solution is to clean using a damp or static-charge cloth so that dust is not just stirred but removed completely-doing this regularly will minimise the opportunity for dust to gather in your home. Do away with large unwanted furniture and air rooms when cleaning to reduce the humidity of the room preventing damp and mold growth […]

As you squeeze another t-shirt into your already stuffed drawers, why not take the plunge and seriously deal with your personal storage? Keep yourself entertained – Turn on your favourite tracks, switch on the radio and get busy with clearing up. Tackle the floor and surfaces first, then open up some cupboards and do a proper review. Tips and Tricks: Keeping Your Garage Clear of Clutter

The garage is the go-to place for clutter in the average modern household. So much so that many people can hardly squeeze out of their cars due to the mountains of unwanted garden furniture and outgrown toys rest in the garage safe from the cold.
