Tips and Tricks: Make a Floor Plan

… Inside of your self storage unit, make sure you use pallets, 2 x 4’s, plywood or anything that will keep your items off the floor. Create a floor plan to decide how you’ll arrange your items, maximising space to its full potential. A good plan will save you the time of having to rearrange your unit while moving in. Leave an aisle in the center of your unit so that you have a walk way to the back of the unit. Use freestanding shelves to help organise your unit. Be sure to store frequently used items at the front of the unit to avoid having to search for hours through different boxes.

Did You Know: Storage Disks

Did You Know: Storage Disks

…that IBM introduced the great-great-great grandfather of today’s storage disks in 1956? It was the size of a refrigerator, and stored a total of 4.4 megabytes on 50 double-sided, two-foot-diameter disks. The disk had a density of 2,000 bits of data per square inch and cost around a whopping £7,000,000 per gigabyte. In comparison, today’s laptop drives are typically 2.5 inches thick, are a size of a deck of cards, and can store up to 160 gigabytes – the price of which is less than 50p per gigabyte. Our self-storage is equally as space efficient and cost effective, which you can secure for just a £10 deposit and use for a week, a month or as long as you need.

Did You Know: Cassette Artwork

Did You Know: Cassette Artwork

…that the cassette, once confined to the realms of storing music, is now being used to make art? Erika Simmons is using the blackened tape of old cassettes to recreate the likeness of popular musicians. She specialises in using non traditional media, from old books to playing cards, magazines, and credit cards, or as she says ‘things that have a mind of their own’, to build something new. Her series, titled ‘Ghost in the Machine’ incorporates materials used to store film and video and includes Marilyn Monroe made from 8mm film reel, the aforementioned cassette piece that depicts Jimi Hendrix, as well as Audrey Hepburn built using old photography film. The reason people choose to use self-storage has gone through a similar rejuvenation of late. Once resigned to the fate of the hardy cassette, and thought upon as somewhere just […]

Did You Know: Chicken Feathers

Did You Know: Chicken Feathers

…that as we move away from being a carbon based economy, new forms of storing hydrogen are being created? Gram for gram, hydrogen has an energy density three times that of petroleum, but litre for litre, the density is very poor. In fact, if you want to avoid having to store it in giant tanks, conventional technology requires that you put it into liquid form (which in itself is energy expensive). An alternative is storing hydrogen in solid materials, and researchers at the University of Delaware, have found that carbonising chicken feathers produces a high surface area, which can store a lot of hydrogen. Efficient as this is, there’s no need to resort to chicken feathers to store your everyday goods. There are plenty of space saving ways to pack things away – from boxes, to really useful trunk cases […]
