Redar

Redar manages the resale of selected furniture and design pieces from collection through to final resolution.

When Andrew Murphy began building the infrastructure for Redar, an innovative managed resale service for selected furniture, design pieces and interiors, he befittingly sought out an operational partner that complemented, rather than cluttered, his vision.

And with high levels of security, flexible scaling, month-by-month commitment and a national footprint among its many appealing features, Big Yellow Self Storage proved an obvious ‘accent piece’ for a business focused on restoring domestic order.

“Redar came into being because of the frustration of having selected furniture in storage and no simple way to realise its value,” said Andrew, describing how the company was inspired by a desire to solve a problem in his own home.

“For years my partner and I had held on to a number of pieces because, although we no longer needed them, we knew they still had value. We had discussed selling them many times, but doing is not straightforward. Large items are difficult to move, photograph, price and position correctly in the market.

“Redar removes that friction. From the moment a client decides to sell, we arrange collection, assessment, pricing, professional photography, listing and buyer management. We handle the process from end-to-end.”

The resale company, which combines its own marketplace with structured sales execution, has established its first processing hub within a Big Yellow store, where items are received into secure units for assessment, cleaning, preparation and professional photography before being listed for sale.

And while Redar only intends to use its space at Big Yellow as a temporary staging post, Andrew is appreciative of the self-storage company’s security measures – which include electronic gates and perimeter fencing, around-the-clock CCTV monitoring and individually alarmed units protected by PIN code access – given the high value of many of the items being handled.

Big Yellow’s nationwide network is another major attraction for Redar’s founder, who said the footprint directly supports his business’ hyper localised intake model, which allows inventory to be sourced, processed and listed efficiently across multiple locations.

“The geographical reach aligns closely with how we are building our resale infrastructure,” Andrew added. “The ability to scale space up or down quickly allows us to expand in a controlled and efficient way. Big Yellow’s locations are well positioned to support major towns and cities as we grow.”

The ability to operate through a distributed network also supports Redar’s aim to reduce unnecessary transport and improve operational efficiency.

“We want to contribute to a more circular economy,” he concluded. “People hold on to unused furniture for many reasons, but our service keeps items in use, reduces waste and returns value back to the original owner.

“We make resale simple by removing friction through structure and technology.”
