Storage Lockers Near Me

Finding space to store all your belongings at home, so they’re not underfoot or always in the way, can be a challenge. And you don’t always need acres of storage space. Sometimes you just want a little bit of extra storage room and figure you can get what you need by clearing out a corner in the loft, making space in the cupboard under the stairs, or getting the suitcases out from under the bed.

All well and good, but what do you do with the random items cleared out? When you don’t need a whole heap of space or have just a few items, a storage locker might perfectly fit the bill.

What to Keep in a Storage Locker?

Just about everyone is familiar with self storage units or rooms. You can find our storage facilities near you in convenient locations throughout the UK, so you’ll have seen them even if you haven’t used them yet.

Storage lockers work just like units, but on a smaller scale and obviously for less cost. There’s no point paying for empty space you’re never going to use. A locker is a winner when you need to keep just a few prized items safe and sound but out of the way.

They’re suitable for either business or personal use. So, you could keep historical accounting records safe (a legal requirement when you’re in business), or your important personal documents such as property deeds, insurance policies, wills, or birth and marriage certificates. There’s an old saying about hoping for the best while planning for the worst, and heaven forbid there should be a fire or flood at your home or place of business. It makes sense to keep important stuff in a safe, alternative location near you.

Storage lockers are also handy for students to stow a few belongings and books during holiday periods. It saves the need to take everything home only to cart it all back again for a new semester or year - and also prevents the annoyance of having to find space to keep it all at home.

How to Choose a Storage Locker

A lot depends on how many and what type of items you need to store, but aside from that there are three main things to think about:

Location:

Consider – is the storage locker near me? Storage lockers are meant to offer convenience, so obviously choose a location that’s handy for you, whether that’s close to home, work, or home-away-from-home such as your university. Our storage lockers are in multiple cities and towns across the country.

Price:

Storage cost plays a part, but that's not the only thing to be aware of as other factors are important too, such as security for instance. Before you make a final decision, make sure you look around at all the options and get a balanced overview of what's on offer.

Contract:

The length of storage contract might be important to you too because maybe you only want to rent a storage locker for a short while. You can rent Big Yellow storage lockers for as long as you need to, but if you only need one in the short term we have you covered there too. With 4-weekly billing and a 14-day notice period, you have the freedom to move out whenever you like - you just pay for those final 14 days from the date you notify us.

You’ll need to pay for four weeks up front, but if you’re sure about your timings you can give notice on the day you move in, then receive a refund on your unused time when you move out. Always have a close look at the terms and conditions and ask questions if anything isn’t crystal clear, including the contract duration, how much notice needs to be given and if it needs to be given at a certain point in the invoice cycle, before you sign on the dotted line.

How Big are Storage Lockers?

Lockers are available in various sizes depending on your needs. Big Yellow storage lockers are 3 feet high and measure 3 square feet. These are either on ground level, or stacked one on top of the other.

If you want something a little larger, our overhead lockers are 4 - 5 feet high and range from 12 - 40 square feet. Overhead lockers are situated above normal self storage full height rooms and are accessed via a movable ladder. For this reason, you might find a small locker on ground level more convenient, especially if you have mobility problems or want to store heavy items.

Locker availability varies between facilities, so always check with your local store to find out what locker sizes they have.

Other Considerations

When you're storing valuable items, security might be important to you.

It's important to us too, and we go further than any other UK storage facility to keep your belongings safe. You’ll find perimeter fences, fire and smoke detection systems, CCTV monitoring and individually alarmed rooms. Staff are always on site during opening hours, with mobile security on call after hours. While we do all we can to keep your items safe, you’re still advised to have your own contents protection which we are happy to provide.

It’s also a good idea to have your own sturdy padlock and, of course, you’ll need to provide your own boxes if you need them. To make it easier for you, we sell cardboard boxes and padlocks via on online Box Shop for delivery or click and collect at the stores.

Renting a storage locker near you can be a cost-effective solution when you have fewer items to store. People also use them as temporary solutions while moving house, redecorating or temporarily downsizing for whatever reason. Have a chat with your local Big Yellow staff, who’ll be happy to answer any questions you have about storage lockers.
