How to use a tape gun
Using a tape gun is one of the quickest and easiest ways to seal your boxes securely, whether you’re moving home or preparing items for storage. With the right setup and a simple technique, you can pack more efficiently and protect your belongings during transit.
What You’ll Need:
- Packing tape (such as Big Yellow packing tape or fragile tape)
- A tape gun (box sealing dispenser)
- A cardboard box
Step 1: Check Tape Direction
Before loading your tape, make sure the sticky side is facing down and the printed side of the tape is facing towards you. This applies to both standard and fragile tape.
Step 2: Prepare the Tape End
Fold over a small section at the end of the tape. This creates a tab, making it easier to start and stop the tape when sealing your box.
Step 3: Load the Tape Gun
Insert the tape roll into the tape gun, ensuring it follows the correct direction.
Thread the tape through the roller mechanism by pulling it around and through the guide until it feeds out smoothly.
Once the tape is correctly in place, you can remove the safety mechanism.
Step 4: Seal the Bottom of the Box
Start by sealing the bottom of your box to provide support before filling it.
Place the tape gun at one end of the box seam and press down firmly.
Pull the tape gun along the seam, keeping the tape tight and flat against the surface.
Step 5: Apply Even Pressure
As you move the tape gun across the box, keep steady pressure so the tape sticks properly.
Smooth out any air bubbles by pressing the tape down as you go.
Step 6: Seal the Top of the Box
Once your box is packed, fold the top flaps so they sit flush together.
Repeat the same taping process along the top seam to secure the box fully.
Final Tip
Using a tape gun properly not only speeds up packing but also helps keep your boxes strong and secure. A well-sealed box is less likely to open during moving or storage, giving you peace of mind that your belongings are protected.
