Working Together to Protect Our Rivers

Supporting our communities goes hand in hand with protecting the environment. That is why our Big Yellow colleagues recently joined veterans from our Foundation partner, Supporting Wounded Veterans, for the South East Rivers Trust Balsam Bash along the River Loddon in Wokingham. Together, we spent the day removing Himalayan Balsam, an invasive non native plant that spreads rapidly along riverbanks, crowds out native wildlife and leaves the ground vulnerable to erosion once it dies back each winter. By removing it before it can set seed, we are helping to restore natural habitats and protect our rivers for future generations.

The day was about much more than conservation. It was an opportunity to work alongside veterans supported by Supporting Wounded Veterans and hear first hand how The Big Yellow Foundation has helped ex service personnel rebuild their lives through employment, training and ongoing support. We also learnt more about the important work South East Rivers Trust carries out to protect and restore rivers across the South East, and the difference volunteers can make when local communities come together with a shared purpose.

 At Big Yellow, volunteering is an important part of how we give back. Days like this strengthen our partnerships, bring colleagues together and create a lasting impact beyond the workplace. A huge thank you to Supporting Wounded Veterans for organising such a rewarding day and to the South East Rivers Trust team for sharing their expertise and leading the activity. Finally, thank you to every Big Yellow colleague who gave their time, enthusiasm and energy to support the day. Together, we are making a positive difference for our communities, our environment and the people who need our support most.
