Our Security

How we keep your belongings safe

We're the UK's leading self storage brand, with 20 years' of experience in offering safe and secure storage for your belongings. Working closely with the Self Storage Association (SSA) UK, the Police and Fire Brigade, and other Statutory Authorities over this time, we have ensured that our all our stores not only comply with, but exceed self storage security regulations.

24 hour CCTV

Digital CCTV cameras monitor all access points, emergency exits and areas outside all our stores, 24 hours a day to help keep your storage unit extra safe. Out of hours, our external security company monitor every one of our self storage facilities using these cameras and the intruder detection systems. They in turn have access to our mobile security patrols to react to any alarm activations.

Electronic security gates and perimeter fencing

Each of our stores has secure perimeter fencing and electronic coded access security gates. Customers can use their individual PIN access codes to pass through these security gates to gain access to the inside of any of our self storage unit facilities during extended access hours.

Individually alarmed storage units

As a further self storage security measure, every storage unit at Big Yellow is individually alarmed. We are the only major UK self storage operator to do this. In the unlikely event of someone gaining access to a storage unit without the correct PIN, a security alarm is activated, and a signal is sent to both our reception and our Monitoring Centre.

Mobile security patrols

All of our alarm systems report to our Monitoring Centre, who in turn call out our mobile security to attend site and investigate any suspicious activity. Some of our storage facilities have a Security Guard attending the store during all of our unmanned hours for extra safety.

Staff on site 7 days a week during trading hours

We have staff on site at every self storage facility, seven days a week during opening hours. As well as helping to make your life easier, they're fully trained to spot – and react to – any suspicious behaviour or activity identified, creating another layer of safety.

Contents protection for your goods

While we offer the best in security and do everything we can to make sure your possessions are safe and secure, there are some things we just can’t guarantee to protect your goods against, such as fire and flood. It is therefore necessary for you to have contents protection in place for any goods you put in storage with us. You will also need your own padlock for your storage unit.

PIN code access

Only you can access your secure storage area via your own individual PIN code.

Fire protection

We work closely with the Fire Authorities to minimise fire risk when designing and building our stores. We implement rigorous fire prevention procedures in our self storage facilities - both by investing in active security systems to monitor everyday events - and also by assessing what customers are storing and how they are using the self storage. All our storage unit facilities are fitted with fire and smoke detectors, which alert the in-store team or the 24 hour monitoring centre when the stores are closed. In the event of any security alert, the appropriate emergency services are immediately notified and dispatched to the scene.

We strictly prohibit the storing of any combustible, flammable or explosive items such as paint, oil, cleaning solvents, gas cylinders, fireworks and tyres. Our store teams are on site seven days a week during our trading hours and conduct daily walk rounds across all storage floors to ensure no activity is taking place or equipment is being used which could potentially result in a fire.

We also insist that all our customers are insured, should any unexpected and unfortunate emergencies take place.
